Most of India's coal comes from Jharia, consisting of 23 large underground and 9 open cast mines. The mining activities in these coalfields started in 1894 and has increasingly grown due to easy availability of coal. Many steel plants are setup in close proximity to the city such as Tata Steel, IISCO, and SAIL.
